BeaverCraft S13X – whittling knife set with spoon knife, whittling knife and detail knife

The BeaverCraft S13X is a whittling set of three knives with walnut wood handles: a spoon knife, a whittling knife and a detail knife. Together they cover the typical steps in wood carving, from removing material to rough out the basic shape, through hollowing, to fine details. The knives come already sharpened. The blades are made of high-carbon steel.

The set also includes a leather case for transport and storage, and a strop with polishing compound. This lets you touch up the blades between projects without buying extra sharpening accessories.

Which knife for which job?

Each of the three knives has its own task. If you know which one to pick and when, you will work more cleanly and with less force.

• Whittling knife: for basic shapes, removing material and straight cuts
• Spoon knife: with a curved blade for hollowing out spoons, bowls and other curves
• Detail knife: for fine contours, edges and small details

Choice of wood and sharpening

For the BeaverCraft whittling sets, the manufacturer specifies a 20° cutting bevel. It is suitable for softwood. It is not recommended for hardwood, because the fine edge dulls more quickly there. A soft wood such as lime (linden) is therefore a good starting point.

To touch up the blade, apply a little polishing compound to the strop. Lay the blade flat on the strop with the bevel down and draw it across the leather with the back of the blade leading, away from the cutting edge, never with the edge leading. Repeat the same number of times on both sides. A blade that is stropped regularly cuts more cleanly and slips less, which also reduces the risk of injury. Store carbon steel blades in a dry place so that they do not rust.
