Mayco AC-310 Silkscreen Medium – mix a ceramic screen printing paste
Mayco AC-310 Silkscreen Medium is a thickener. Mixed with underglaze, Stroke & Coat or Designer Liner, it makes a ceramic paste for screen printing on clay or bisque. You press the paste through a screen printing mesh to transfer patterns and motifs onto your ceramics. The jar contains 75 g.
The medium can be used with low-fire and mid-range glazes, for example from cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 6 (approx. 1,222 °C, guide value per Orton chart). The medium has no firing range of its own: you fire according to the instructions for the glaze you mix it with. According to Mayco, the product is dinnerware safe.
Mixing the screen printing paste
Work on a flat surface and add the medium in small steps. This lets you control the consistency, rather than making the paste too thin.
- Place 4 parts underglaze (a blob about 2.5 cm wide) and 1 part medium (a pinch) on the surface.
- Mix thoroughly with the palette knife until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
- Add small amounts of medium until the paste is as thick as peanut butter.
- Press the paste through the screen printing mesh onto clay or bisque with a squeegee or your finger.
Consistency, firing and dinnerware
If the mixture is too thin, the motif may run. It is better to work towards a thicker paste by adding a little more medium. The medium is not fired on its own, but together with the glaze. When firing, follow the instructions for the underglaze or glaze you have used. If you are decorating dinnerware, note that according to Mayco the product is dinnerware safe. The result depends on the glaze you mix the medium with.
