Mayco Engobe Terracotta EG-007 – matt terracotta look for stoneware

Mayco Stoneware Engobe Terracotta EG-007 gives ceramics a warm, matt terracotta finish. You can give light, speckled or dark clay the natural look of terracotta without changing the clay body. The engobe can be used on its own or combined with transparent, semi-transparent and effect stoneware glazes.

The colour depends on the firing: at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in an oxidation firing, EG-007 fires to a stable, matt colour. In a reduction firing at cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the shade becomes darker but remains stable. Clay body, application thickness and kiln atmosphere also affect the result.

Application

Stir the engobe thoroughly before use. Apply two to three even coats with a soft fan brush, letting each coat dry before applying the next. It can be applied to damp clay, greenware or softly bisque-fired ware. Then fire the piece with the matt engobe finish, or cover it with a suitable stoneware glaze. The engobe is suitable for sgraffito, majolica, marbling, screen printing and wax resist.

Glaze over the engobe

A transparent glaze can intensify the terracotta tone and give the surface more depth and gloss. Semi-transparent and reactive glazes create effects over the warm base colour. Opaque glazes partly or completely cover the engobe. The engobe can also change the flow behaviour and firing result of the glaze on top. Test clay body, application thickness, glaze and firing temperature on a test piece before starting larger projects.

Dinnerware and safety

For eating and drinking vessels, EG-007 must be sealed with a transparent, dinnerware-safe clear glaze that forms a closed surface. Only in this combination is the engobe suitable for dinnerware. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means: non-hazardous (no labelling required).
