Lino Roller 49 mm – Rubber Brayer for Even Ink Coverage

The 49 mm lino roller is a rubber brayer with a handle, used to apply printing ink to lino blocks and other printing plates. It is suitable for lino printing, relief printing techniques and monoprints. Rubber lays down a thicker, more even layer of ink than a foam roller, so the print covers cleanly and without streaks.

At 49 mm wide, the roller suits small and medium-sized blocks, for example for cards, stamps or small motifs. For large blocks there is the wider 98 mm lino roller.

Inking the block

Put a little ink on a smooth inking plate and roll it out in several directions until you have an even, thin film of ink. Then roll over the lino block with light pressure, first lengthways, then crossways. This keeps the raised areas evenly covered.

• It is better to ink twice thinly than once thickly
• Too much ink fills fine lines and details in the print
• Clean the roller straight after printing, using a cleaner suited to the ink you used, so that no ink dries in the rubber

Which roller width should you choose?

Choose the 49 mm roller for small and medium-sized motifs and when you are working in a tight space. If the block is much wider than the roller, you will need several passes, which should overlap slightly, and the result is more likely to look patchy. For that, the 98 mm roller is the better choice.
