Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-77 Glo-Worm – glaze for fine lines and opaque coverage
Stroke & Coat SC-77 Glo-Worm is a ceramic glaze from Mayco for painting on damp clay, bisque and stoneware. You apply it with a brush and fire it in oxidation or reduction. It fires glossy and needs no clear glaze over it.
According to Mayco, the colours in the series can be mixed with one another and thinned with water or medium. This lets you tint Glo-Worm or thin it for softer gradients and transparent effects. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. The AP seal (Approved Product) stands, according to ACMI, for a glaze with no hazard labelling.
Applying Glo-Worm
Stir the glaze well before applying. One coat looks translucent; with 2–3 coats Glo-Worm gives opaque coverage, as recommended by Mayco. Let each coat dry before you apply the next, so lines and details stay crisp. According to Mayco, the glaze stays where you apply it, which helps with fine motifs and multicoloured designs. Test the glaze and clay in the kiln on a test piece before firing the actual piece.
Firing and temperature
Stroke & Coat is formulated for cone 06/05. The reference is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). According to Mayco, the firing range runs from cone 06 to cone 10 (cone 6: approx. 1222 °C, cone 10: approx. 1285 °C, guide values per Orton chart). For Glo-Worm, Mayco gives the following at cone 6: opaque, no colour change. At mid-range or high-fire temperatures, motifs may run. The behaviour depends on the colour, so a test firing is worthwhile for stoneware.
- Reference firing: cone 06
- Firing range: cone 06 to 10
- Oxidation and reduction possible
Suitable for dinnerware?
Mayco labels Stroke & Coat as dinnerware safe, meaning suitable for tableware. According to ACMI, the AP seal stands for a glaze with no hazard labelling.
