Merino Felting Wool 21 micron – Fine Tops for Wet Felting
Kartehuset Merino Felting Wool is 100 % merino wool, intended for wet felting, for example felted jewellery, decorations, dolls and accessories. The wool comes from South American merino sheep and is supplied as combed tops. The fibres therefore run largely parallel and can be drawn out into thin, even layers.
At 21 microns, it is one of the fine merino grades. This gives a soft, smooth surface that looks neat on small pieces and fine details. One bundle weighs 100 g. Choose your colour from the options.
How to wet felt
In wet felting, the scales of the wool fibres interlock through moisture, soap and friction to form firm felt. In brief:
- Pull the wool into thin wisps and lay them out in several layers, each layer at right angles to the previous one.
- Dampen the surface with warm soapy water and gently press out the air.
- Rub very gently at first so that nothing shifts, and increase the pressure once the fibres hold.
- Finally, full the piece firmly until it is solid, rinse out the soap and leave it to dry.
Planning your project
The piece shrinks considerably during felting, so make it correspondingly larger. For thin sheets or hollow shapes such as jewellery beads and doll parts, fine layers are important: tufts that are too thick felt together unevenly. To combine more colours, add further bundles.
