DMC mini darning loom – weave over holes in knitwear and add decorative touches
The DMC mini darning loom (art. no. U2118) has 14 hooks. You can use it to darn holes in jumpers, cardigans and socks, or to weave small decorative motifs. According to DMC, you need no previous experience of weaving or embroidery. The loom is designed for DMC Eco Vita Crewel wool yarn and is based on a design from the 1940s.
You can keep a repair discreet or make it a deliberate feature. In a contrast colour, the patch becomes an accent.
How weaving on the loom works
The needle acts as the shuttle. When you run a finger over the 14 hooks, the warp threads rise and fall alternately. You pass the yarn through this shed with the needle and repeat row by row until the area is closed. The hooks replace the laborious business of weaving over and under by hand.
Which repairs is the loom suitable for?
What matters is the size of the damaged area: the loom weaves patches up to a maximum of 5.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high. That suits small holes, moth damage or worn-through areas on jumpers, cardigans and socks. Larger damage has to be mended with several patches or in another way.
Which yarn should you use?
DMC recommends Eco Vita Crewel wool yarn. With natural wool yarn, the patch blends well with woollen knitwear. For a visible repair, choose a contrast colour; for a discreet one, a shade as close as possible to the original.
