Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-28 Blue Isle – gloss ceramic glaze, 236 ml
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-28 Blue Isle is a ceramic glaze for painting on damp clay, bisque and stoneware, and it fires to a gloss finish in the kiln. You apply it with a brush and can create lines, details and multicoloured designs. The bottle contains 236 ml (8 oz).
You control the opacity through the number of coats: according to Mayco, one coat is translucent, and Mayco recommends 2–3 coats for full opacity. You do not need a clear glaze, as the glaze fires to a gloss finish on its own. All colours in the series can be mixed with one another, and thinning them with water or medium gives wash and watercolour effects.
Applying Blue Isle
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a soft brush. Let each coat dry before applying the next, otherwise the brush will pull up the layer underneath. For strong, opaque areas, allow for 2–3 coats. A single coat or thinned glaze gives transparent effects. If you want to mix several colours from the series, test the mixing ratio on a test tile first and make a note of it.
Firing and temperature
Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 to cone 10 for Stroke & Coat, oxidising or reducing. The glazes are designed for cone 06/05. If you fire higher, for example at cone 6, the colours behave differently according to Mayco: some become more transparent or lighter. There is no separate information for SC-28 Blue Isle, so a test firing is worthwhile at stoneware temperatures.
- Cone 06: approx. 998 °C (guide value per Orton chart)
- Cone 10: approx. 1,285 °C (guide value per Orton chart)
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the surface is dinnerware safe once fired as directed. The ACMI AP seal (Approved Product) means, according to ACMI: non-hazardous (no labelling required). Incorrect firing or contact with glazes that are not suitable for dinnerware can make dinnerware unusable. For plates and cups, therefore, use clean brushes and kiln shelves.
