Prym cable needles – curved needles for cable knitting

Prym cable needles are curved auxiliary needles that you use to hold and cross stitches when knitting cables. Thanks to the bend in the middle, the needles keep the held stitches secure so they do not slip off. This is useful for scarves, hats, jumpers and other projects with cables.

The cable needles come in two size sets, one for fine yarn and one for thick yarn. Each set contains two needles, one per size. Choose the size from the options.

Knitting a cable with the cable needle

When knitting cables, you place the stitches that are to be crossed on the cable needle for a short while. The curved shape holds them securely in the meantime.

• Knit to the crossing and slip the required stitches onto the cable needle.
• Hold the needle with the stitches at the back or front of the work, depending on which way the cable should lean.
• Knit the next stitches from the left needle.
• Then knit the stitches from the cable needle.

Which size to choose

Choose the set to suit your yarn weight: use the set for fine yarn with thinner yarns and the set for thick yarn with heavier yarns. The cable needle should not be thicker than your knitting needle, otherwise the stitches will be stretched at the crossing. The needle size you need for your design is given in your pattern.
