Botz Stoneware Engobe 9806 Ocean – matt, opaque engobe in blue/deep blue

Botz Stoneware Engobe 9806 Ocean is a liquid engobe in blue/deep blue for adding colour to stoneware. It is designed for a firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C and comes in an 800 ml tin, which also covers larger pieces or several projects.

Without a glaze, the engobe fires to a soft matt, slightly earthy finish, covers well and picks out outlines sharply. This makes it suitable for motifs, surfaces and decorations where edges need to stay clean. Under a clear glaze the colour becomes more intense and vivid, and the surface turns glossy. According to Botz, the clear glazes 9300 and 9870 are examples. Ocean can be mixed with other Botz Edition colours. Mixed with 9801 White, it gives pastel shades.

Application

The engobe settles in the tin, so start by stirring it thoroughly. Then apply it to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay.

• Stir well until the settled particles are completely back in suspension
• Apply 2–3 coats with a brush
• Let each coat dry well before applying the next
• Fire in the range of 1180–1280 °C

Matt or glossy – which suits your piece?

Applied on its own, Ocean stays matt, with opaque colour and clear outlines. This suits decorations and surfaces that should have a calm, earthy look. If you want vivid colour and a glossy surface, cover the engobe with a clear glaze. A test piece made from your clay and your glaze will show you beforehand how the shade and gloss turn out. If a coat is applied too thinly, the colour covers less evenly. In that case, add another coat rather than applying a thicker coat in one go.
