Efco waxed flat wick – with metal holder for homemade candles

The waxed flat wick from Efco is made of cotton and comes with a metal holder. You need it for making your own candles, for example in glasses or cups. It is suitable for candles made of paraffin, soy, rapeseed and beeswax. The wax coating makes the wick stiffer, so it is easier to insert and keep straight. The holder at the end of the wick gives it a firm base in the mould or glass. Choose your size from the options.

Inserting the wick

Place the wick with its holder in the centre of the mould or glass. A drop of wax or an adhesive dot stops the holder from slipping while you pour. To keep the wick straight, lay a wooden stick across the opening at the top and clamp the wick to it. Pour the wax in slowly and let the candle cool completely. Then trim the wick to about 5 mm before you light the candle.

Choosing the wick size

The wick must suit the diameter of your candle. If it is too thin, the flame sinks into the wax and the candle only burns a tunnel. If it is too thick, the candle flickers and gives off soot. When trying a new combination of wax and container, light a test candle first before you pour larger quantities.
