Rico Design Punch Needle 5 mm – for three-dimensional embroidery with thick yarn
With the Rico Design Punch Needle 5 mm, you embroider three-dimensional motifs on loosely woven fabric, for example for cushions, wall hangings or figures. The needle is 19 cm long and its length is adjustable. According to Rico Design, it is intended for thicker wool such as aran and chunky yarns.
Needle punching creates loops that give the motif a raised, textured surface. This works particularly well on cotton fabric with a panama weave, known as monk's cloth. With the adjustable length, you set the needle to suit the yarn and the loop height you want.
Working with the punch needle
Stretch the fabric taut in an embroidery hoop so that it does not give way as you work. Trace your motif in mirror image on the back if you want the loops to form on the front. Thread the yarn through the needle and push it evenly into the fabric, without lifting it completely out of the fabric between stitches. This keeps the loops regular. The needle tip is sharp, so work with care.
Which yarn and fabric suit it?
The 5 mm needle is designed for thicker yarns. With aran or chunky yarn, you fill areas more quickly and get bold, clearly visible loops. For fine details, you need a thinner needle with suitable yarn. The fabric should be loosely woven so that the thick yarn can pass through. Monk's cloth meets this requirement, as it has a panama weave. Test the yarn and needle length on a scrap of fabric first.
