Rayher Punch Needle Set – adjustable pen with 3 needle sizes

With the Rayher Punch Needle Set (art. no. 69226000) you can embroider loop and filled-area designs on fabric. The adjustable punch needle pen comes with three needles of 1.3, 1.6 and 2.2 mm, and the thick needle is already fitted. Two extra-long threaders and detailed, illustrated instructions are also included.

According to Rayher, the tool is particularly suitable for cotton and linen fabric and works well with an embroidery hoop. The needle sizes are matched to 3–6-strand embroidery thread, thinner wool ribbons and very narrow ribbons. With the three sizes you can switch according to the yarn and the look you want, without needing a second tool.

Working with the punch needle

Stretch the fabric tightly in an embroidery hoop, as it must stay taut throughout the work. Thread the yarn using the threader and check that the thread always runs freely through the needle, otherwise it will catch and the loops will be uneven. For most punch needle work you push the needle in from the back of the fabric, so the loops form on the front. Draw motifs with lettering or a set direction in reverse beforehand.

Which needle and which fabric?

As a rule of thumb, use the thin 1.3 mm needle for fine thread and the thick 2.2 mm needle for heavier yarns or wool ribbons; the medium 1.6 mm needle sits in between. Test the combination on a scrap of fabric first. Do not choose a fabric that is woven too tightly, as the needle will be hard to push through. Loosely woven linen and cotton fabrics are the right choice.
