Wooden knitting gauge – stitches, rows and needle size at a glance

The wooden knitting gauge helps you when knitting jumpers and other garments. You use it to check needle sizes, count stitches and rows, and convert the number you need for any size and yarn weight you want.

This is particularly handy if you are not following a pattern exactly but choosing a different yarn or a different size. With the converted figures you can plan the cast-on, increases and decreases, and number of rows accurately.

Using the gauge

First knit a swatch in the yarn and with the needle size you want to use. With the gauge you work out how many stitches and rows fit into a given length. From this you calculate the number of stitches and rows for your size. It is best to wash and dry the swatch before counting, in the same way as you plan to care for the finished piece, so that the stitch pattern does not change afterwards.
