Wooden tension square – counting the stitches and rows of your tension swatch
With the wooden tension square, you can work out the number of stitches and rows in your tension swatch when knitting or crocheting. The engraved measurements help you count stitches and rows over 10 × 10 cm without fiddling with a ruler and tape measure.
The square is light and compact and fits into any craft bag. The wood feels pleasant to handle and is sturdily made.
How to measure your tension
First knit or crochet a swatch with the yarn and the needle or crochet hook you want to use for your project. Lay it flat without stretching it, and place the square on an area in the middle of the swatch, not at the edge, because the edge stitches are often uneven. Count the stitches and rows that fall within the measurements in the square. Compare the numbers with the figure in your pattern: what matters is the tension given in your pattern; the figure on the ball band is only a guide. If you have too many stitches, you are working too tightly and should use a larger needle; if you have too few stitches, choose a smaller one.
