Botz 9606 Lava liquid glaze – glossy orange-red with texture

Botz 9606 Lava liquid glaze is a glossy, opaque orange-red glaze for earthenware, applied with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics. It forms a lively surface texture that varies with the application and the firing. In a raku firing it glows particularly strongly.

The glaze is stable in the firing range of 1020 to 1060 °C and is suitable for raku. It tends to produce white edges, which can appear on rims and raised areas. If you allow for this, the effect stays intentional and won't catch you out.

Using the glaze

Lava is a liquid glaze and is used straight from the pot. Stir it well before applying, as the colour pigments settle.

• Stir the glaze thoroughly and thin with a little water if needed
• Apply with a brush to bisque-fired ceramics (bisque firing at least 950 °C)
• Leave to dry well and repeat if needed
• Apply thickly so that the colour and the texture show to best effect
• Firing range 1020–1060 °C, with oxygen supply

Firing, edges and effects

Fire Lava with an oxygen supply where possible, or don't pack the pieces too tightly in the kiln. The glaze tends to produce white edges, so it is worth making a test piece before glazing a larger piece. In a raku firing the orange-red glows particularly strongly. If you also brush Botz 9607 over the surface unevenly, attractive effects result according to the glaze description. Here too, test on a sample piece first to see how the combination behaves with your clay and firing.
