According to Prym, the needle geometry and ballpoint tip push the fibres aside as you sew instead of piercing them. This leaves the fibres of the stretch fabric undamaged and helps to avoid ladders.

According to Prym, the flat shank fits all common household sewing machines. Even so, check your machine's manual to confirm that it uses the 130/705 needle system.

Sewing with the jersey needle

Insert the needle with the flat side of the shank facing the direction your machine specifies. For stretchy fabrics, use a stretch or zigzag stitch so that the seam stretches with the fabric. Change the needle as soon as it becomes blunt or skips stitches, because a bent or worn tip can also damage fine knitted fabric.

Which size to choose
