Schmincke Rubbelkrepp – masking fluid for clean white areas
Schmincke Rubbelkrepp is a liquid, ammonia-free masking fluid for watercolour, gouache and airbrush. You use it to cover areas of your picture that are to stay free of paint, leaving sharp edges and clean white areas. It is suitable for watercolour paper, smooth drawing board and similar painting surfaces.
The masking fluid is odourless and based on an ammonia-free synthetic resin dispersion. It mixes with water but dries quickly to a rubbery, water-insoluble film. Once you have finished painting, you rub the dry film off again. Choose the size and colour (neutral or blue) from the options.
Working with Rubbelkrepp
Apply the masking fluid undiluted to the areas that are to remain free of colour. Ruling pens are suited to fine lines, sticks to larger areas. It is best not to use good brushes for applying it, as the film is hard to wash out again.
- Apply the masking fluid with a wooden stick, cotton bud, dip pen or ruling pen
- Leave to dry completely: depending on the thickness of the layer, this takes from a few minutes to over an hour
- Only then paint with watercolour, gouache or airbrush
- Let the paint dry completely too, then rub the film off with your finger or an eraser
Points to note
If you dilute Rubbelkrepp with water, it may penetrate deeper into the surface and will then be harder to remove. Particularly soft, lightly sized papers with a texture, such as rag papers or torchon papers, are not suitable for the masking technique. If in doubt, do a test on an offcut. Clean your tools straight away with soap and water while the film has not yet dried. Close the container immediately after use and store it in a cool, dry place free from frost.
