Mayco SW-191 Peppered Plum – burgundy stoneware glaze with crystal effect
Mayco Stoneware SW-191 Peppered Plum is a glossy, opaque stoneware glaze in a rich burgundy for vases, bowls and vessels. It contains small black crystals and large, semi-transparent burgundy crystals. This gives the surface depth and contrasts that a single-colour glaze does not produce.
Over textures and reliefs the glaze breaks and shows a warm taupe gradient. The more texture your piece has, such as incised lines, stamped patterns or applied elements, the more clearly this effect comes through. On smooth surfaces it is mainly the burgundy with the crystals that stands out.
Application and firing
Apply the glaze in 2–3 even coats with a brush, or dip the piece. Stir well beforehand and let each coat dry before applying the next. According to Mayco, spraying is not intended. The firing range is cone 5–6 in an oxidising atmosphere. For cone 6: approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart.
- Apply the glaze to the prepared clay body
- Brush on 2–3 even coats or dip
- Fire in the cone 5–6 firing range in oxidation
Design and choice
The result depends on the clay, the thickness of application and the firing schedule. The crystals melt during firing and form organic flows that turn out slightly different on every piece. A test tile on your own clay shows you beforehand how strongly the taupe and the crystals come through. According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe when used as directed by the manufacturer. The Mayco Stoneware series includes further effect glazes such as the Micro and Magma tones if you are looking for a different surface.
