Mayco Stoneware SW-189 Cenote – sky-blue gloss glaze with brown crystals
Mayco's SW-189 Cenote stoneware glaze is a semi-opaque, sky-blue gloss glaze for the stoneware range. During firing, various brown crystals melt into the glaze and stand out as speckles against the blue background. This gives bowls, mugs and vases a lively, deep surface.
According to Mayco, Cenote is dinnerware safe. The container holds 473 ml. It belongs to the Mayco Stoneware range, which is intended for higher firing temperatures in the stoneware range.
Firing and colour effect
Cenote works best in the stoneware range, that is at cone 5–10. At cone 10 (approx. 1285 °C, guide value per Orton chart) the base colour becomes darker, and the crystals become darker and more strongly defined. If you would like a lighter blue and softer crystals, fire lower within the stated range. As the glaze is semi-opaque, it looks slightly different depending on the clay body. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the blue and the crystals look with your firing schedule.
Tip: a lighter crystal effect
Mayco names SW-166 Norse Blue as a base glaze for Cenote. For a lighter crystal effect, apply two coats of SW-166 Norse Blue and add a third coat of SW-189 Cenote. Apply the glaze with a brush and do not spray it, as Mayco expressly states that it should not be used as a spray. Protect the kiln shelf by leaving the foot of the piece unglazed or by using kiln wash in case the glaze runs a little during firing.
Dinnerware and safety
According to the manufacturer, Mayco describes Cenote as dinnerware safe when used as intended. According to ACMI, the AP (Approved Product) seal means: no hazard labelling required. For the finished piece, observe the manufacturer's application and firing instructions.
