Mayco Dark Magma SW-406 – reactive stoneware glaze with a volcanic texture
Mayco Stoneware Dark Magma (SW-406) is a reactive stoneware glaze for decorative ceramics. It has a deep, almost black colour reminiscent of cooled lava. The surface turns out rough with a pronounced, natural texture. The glaze suits bowls, vases, sculptures and other pieces that are meant to be looked at and touched, but not used for eating or drinking.
Mayco expressly labels Dark Magma as not dinnerware safe (Not Dinnerware Safe). Do not use it on cups, plates, bowls or other vessels that come into contact with food.
Which pieces suit Dark Magma?
The rough, textured surface is a deliberate part of the look. It works especially well on objects where the texture is the focus, such as decorative vases, wall pieces, figures or plant pots without food contact. Because the glaze is reactive, the result can look slightly different depending on the clay, the application and the firing. A test piece made from your own clay will show you beforehand how it turns out for you. The Mayco Stoneware series includes further glazes, for example Light Magma, Mudcrack or the Micro shades.
Application and firing
Dark Magma is designed for the stoneware range. The firing range is cone 5–10; as a guide value per Orton chart, cone 6 corresponds to approx. 1222 °C and cone 10 to approx. 1285 °C. Fire the pieces only within this range, as the glaze does not mature below it.
- Stir the glaze well before applying
- Apply with a brush to a clean, dust-free clay body; do not spray
- Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that it does not stick to the kiln shelf
- Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash or kiln furniture
