Mayco Stoneware SW-405 Light Magma – rough stoneware glaze for decorative ceramics
Mayco Stoneware SW-405 Light Magma is a reactive stoneware glaze in a light shade. It gives decorative ceramics a rough, volcanic-looking surface reminiscent of cooled lava. The glaze suits vases, bowls, figures, wall pieces and other items where texture takes centre stage.
Because of its rough surface, Light Magma is expressly not intended for dinnerware or for contact with food. Use it for decorative pieces, not for cups, plates or bowls.
Application and firing
Apply the glaze to a clean, dust-free clay body, usually bisque-fired ceramics. Stir it well beforehand. Do not spray it, as Mayco expressly prohibits this. Firing is in the stoneware range at cone 5–10 (approx. 1200–1300 °C). With reactive glazes it is worth making a test piece from your own clay, because clay colour, application thickness and firing schedule all influence the result.
- Leave the foot of the piece free of glaze so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf
- Protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash
- Do not fire above the stated temperature range
Choosing a glaze from the series
Light Magma is one of the textured glazes in the Mayco Stoneware series. If you want the same character in a darker shade, take a look at Dark Magma (SW-406). For functional ceramics such as cups or plates, you need a glaze that the manufacturer expressly approves for that purpose; Light Magma is not intended for it.
