Mayco SG-302 Snowfall – dimensional glaze for white snow effects
Mayco SG-302 Snowfall is a dimensional glaze for white, textured surfaces. You can use it to create snow effects on ceramics, for example for winter decorations, landscapes or sculpted scenes. Snowfall is non-flowing, so the glaze stays where you apply it. This means the way you apply it affects the result: a brush, a sponge or a bottle with a tip each produce different textures.
Fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart). This gives a white, textured surface. At cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), Mayco states no change on its product page.
Applying Snowfall
Snowfall can be applied over unfired glazes, to greenware, clay or bisque-fired ware. Apply at least two coats so that the surface turns an even white.
- Stir the glaze well before applying.
- Apply 2 or more coats with a soft brush or sponge.
- For sculpted effects, use a bottle with a tip (Writer Tip); according to Mayco, an application up to ¾ inch (approx. 1.9 cm) thick is possible.
- Handle dried glaze carefully, as it flakes off easily.
Firing, colour and combinations
Snowfall is intended for cone 06. Mayco also states that the glaze can be fired higher and shows a puffy texture at mid-range. If you want to be sure of the texture, fire a test piece with your application first. A coat of Mayco Stroke & Coat over Snowfall tints the white glaze. Note that Snowfall boils on green glazes containing copper.
