Mayco Stoneware SW-217 Micro Cerulean – translucent blue with micro-crystals
Mayco Stoneware SW-217 Micro Cerulean is a brush-on stoneware glaze that fires glossy, translucent and medium blue. At 1230 °C it develops an aqua shimmer that breaks over textures, and blue shimmering micro-crystallisation forms during firing. The glaze can be fired in oxidation and in reduction. It belongs to the Mayco Stoneware series, which also includes Micro Ash and Micro Champagne.
Because the glaze is translucent, your clay body has a clear influence on the result. Application thickness, firing process and temperature also change the colour and surface, and at higher temperatures the colour can shift to a variegated grey-blue. A test piece on your clay in your own kiln will show you beforehand how Micro Cerulean looks for you.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before use so that the colour particles are evenly distributed. Apply it to bisque-fired ceramic with a brush or dip the piece. According to Mayco, the glaze is not intended for spraying.
- Apply 2–3 coats; with three coats the glaze stays stable, while more coats or an application that is too thick can cause running
- Apply each coat evenly and thickly enough, otherwise streaky brush marks stay visible with this translucent glaze
- For crystal formation, Mayco fires its Micro glazes at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart) in oxidation
- Reference firing for the description above: 1230 °C
Not dinnerware safe
According to Mayco, Micro Cerulean is not suitable for dinnerware or for contact with food, as the surface durability is limited. Use the glaze for decorative pieces such as vases, display bowls, tiles or sculptures. The glaze contains zinc and soluble copper, so please note the warnings.
