Botz PRO 9313 Pyrit Weiß – white liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9313 Pyrit Weiß is a ready-to-use, glossy white liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware. You apply it with a brush and fire it across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C. This means one glaze can be used for different clays and kilns.
The appearance depends on the firing temperature: in the earthenware range the PRO palette becomes coloured and almost opaque, while at higher temperatures it forms a semi-transparent, glassy surface. According to Botz, good results can also be achieved on porcelain at 1250 °C. With a semi-transparent result the clay body shows through, so a test piece made from your own clay will show in advance how the white looks for you.
Application and firing temperature
Stir the glaze well before use. How many coats you apply and how the glaze looks depends on the firing temperature:
- Earthenware from 1020 °C: 2–3 coats, the glaze becomes coloured and almost opaque
- Early-vitrifying clays around 1150 °C: 2 coats, the surface becomes more semi-transparent
- Stoneware and porcelain around 1250 °C: 2 coats, the glaze becomes glassy and semi-transparent
Preventing runs
Botz PRO tends to run when applied thickly, especially at higher temperatures from about 1150 °C. It is therefore best to apply the glaze in several thin layers, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and, if necessary, stand it on a kiln shelf protected with kiln wash.
Choosing from the range
Besides Pyrit Weiß (9313), Botz PRO is also available as 9310 Malachit, 9311 Topasblau, 9312 Onyxschwarz and 9314 Rauchquarz, each in 200 ml and 800 ml. According to Botz, the range combines well with BOTZ Unidekor.
