Botz 9865 Eukalyptus Stoneware Glaze – Satin-Matt with Green-Blue-Grey Effects

Botz stoneware glaze 9865 Eukalyptus is an intensely coloured, satin-matt liquid glaze for stoneware with fine green-blue-grey effects. You brush it on and fire it within a range of 1220 to 1280 °C. The tin contains 200 ml.

The firing temperature has a marked influence on how this glaze looks. At a higher temperature it turns greener and glossier; at a lower temperature it becomes bluer and more matt. So the firing decides whether you get a calm, granite-matt blue-green or a livelier, glossier surface.

Colour at different firing temperatures

Eukalyptus responds visibly to temperature across the whole firing range. According to Botz, 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold is recommended. This is a good starting point if you are firing the glaze for the first time.

• 1220 °C: more blue colouring, more matt, less play of effects
• 1250 °C: medium green-blue shade, granite-matt, attractive play of effects
• 1280 °C: more greenish colouring, glossier, plenty of effects

Applying the glaze

Stir the glaze thoroughly before use, as the colour pigments settle in the tin. Apply 2 to 3 coats with a brush; Botz recommends 3 coats rather than 2. Let each coat dry properly before applying the next. A coat that is too thin shows less colour and fewer effects. A test piece made from your own clay shows you beforehand how the colour and effects turn out in your firing.
