Botz PRO 9301 Opalweiß – glossy glaze for earthenware up to high firing

Botz PRO 9301 Opalweiß is a liquid, glossy white glaze for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. The firing range runs from 1020 to 1280 °C, so you can use the same glaze at low earthenware temperatures and in high firing. The tub contains 200 ml, and the glaze is made in Germany.

The PRO range comes in several colours and in 200 and 800 ml. According to Botz, how the colour and opacity turn out depends on the firing temperature. The following information applies to the PRO range as a whole.

Firing temperature and application

The PRO range behaves differently depending on the temperature and the clay. It is therefore worth choosing the number of coats before firing:

• From 1020 °C (earthenware): The glaze becomes coloured and almost opaque. Botz recommends 2–3 coats.
• Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): The colour is retained, and the surface becomes more semi-transparent. Here Botz recommends 2 coats.
• High firing/stoneware: The surface becomes glassy and semi-transparent. According to Botz, the glaze also gives good results on porcelain at 1250 °C.

Avoiding runs

Botz points out that the PRO glazes tend to run if applied thickly. Stir the glaze well before applying it, and apply one more thin coat rather than one that is too thick. Let each coat dry before applying the next. Leave the foot of the piece unglazed so that nothing runs onto the kiln shelf. A test piece on your own clay will show you beforehand how Opalweiß looks at your firing temperature.
