Botz PRO 9303 Citringelb – yellow glaze for earthenware to stoneware
Botz PRO 9303 Citringelb is a liquid yellow glaze from Botz for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It can be used across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, so you do not have to tie the glaze to a single temperature. It suits clays that you fire at different temperatures anyway. The surface is glossy.
The result depends on the firing temperature. In the earthenware range from 1020 °C, Citringelb turns a strong colour and is almost opaque. At around 1150 °C, as needed by some early-vitrifying clays, the colour is retained but the surface becomes semi-transparent. In the high-fire and stoneware range, it gives a glassy, semi-transparent surface in an intense pastel shade. On porcelain, Botz achieves good results at 1250 °C.
Application and firing
Apply the glaze to a clean, bisque-fired clay body, and stir it well beforehand. The number of coats depends on the firing temperature, and you can use these figures as a guide:
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): apply 2 to 3 coats; the colour becomes strong and almost opaque
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): apply 2 coats; the surface becomes semi-transparent
- High fire/stoneware and porcelain at 1250 °C: glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades
Avoiding runs
Botz points out that the glaze tends to run when applied thickly. So do not apply it too thickly, especially on the lower part of the piece, and leave the foot ring bare so that nothing drips onto the kiln shelf. Because the glaze can fire semi-transparent, the colour of the clay affects the result. A test tile made from your own clay will show you beforehand how the yellow looks with your clay.
Combining and choosing
Botz PRO can be combined with Botz Unidekor, for example for decoration on top of the glaze. The series includes other colours such as 9300 Transparent, 9301 Opalweiß, 9302 Achatgrau and 9304 Seladongrün. Besides the 200 ml tub, Citringelb is also available in 800 ml, which is handy if you are glazing larger areas or several pieces.
