Botz Stoneware Engobe 9824 Rot – opaque red for stoneware up to 1280 °C
Botz stoneware engobe 9824 Rot is a red engobe from the Botz Edition range, used to colour stoneware before firing. Without glaze it has a soft matt, earthy look, covers well and gives crisp contours. According to Botz, the Edition also covers very well on dark clay bodies. The tub contains 200 ml.
The engobe stays stable across the whole firing range of 1180 to 1280 °C. This means you can fire it in one go with your stoneware clay and glazes. In its examples, Botz shows the Edition colours fired at 1250 °C. This figure is an example firing; the firing range is 1180–1280 °C.
Application
Stir the engobe well before use. Apply it in 2–3 coats to leather-hard or bisque-fired clay and let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. This gives an even, opaque red. Thin, dried coats run less than a single thick one.
Matt or glossy – with and without glaze
Applied neat, the red stays matt. If you want it glossy and more vivid, cover the engobe with one coat of clear glaze, for example Botz 9300 or 9870. Botz recommends the Edition engobes with a suitable glaze, depending on the glaze, for tableware too. This does not apply to surfaces fired without glaze.
Mixing and combining colours
Botz Edition colours can be mixed with each other. You can mix your own shades from 9824 Rot with other colours in the range. The Edition comprises 15 stoneware engobes and is available in 200 ml and 800 ml. A test piece on your own clay shows in advance how the red looks in your firing.
