Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 254 – Fine-Grogged Stoneware Clay
Goerg & Schneider Clay Body 254 is a versatile white to light cream-firing stoneware clay suitable for throwing, hand-building, pressing and stamping. With 25% fine grog and a particle size of only 0 to 0.2 mm, it combines good dimensional stability with a plastic and comparatively smooth working texture.
On the pottery wheel, the body is particularly suitable for larger vessels and ceramic objects, as the fine grog provides additional support and stability. It can also be used for building smaller pieces, modelling, free-form work and ceramic pressing techniques.
After firing, the clay develops a light white to cream-coloured body. This provides a versatile base for transparent, coloured and opaque glazes. Unglazed or partially glazed surfaces retain a natural and light ceramic appearance.
Versatile Stoneware Clay for Throwing and Hand-Building
The very fine grog is considerably less noticeable during use than a coarse particle size. This makes the clay suitable for ceramic artists who require additional stability while still wanting a relatively smooth surface and good throwing properties.

Is Clay Body 254 suitable for beginners?
The fine grog helps support the clay and can be useful when throwing larger vessels or building ceramic objects. At the same time, the surface remains relatively fine. This also makes the body an interesting option for beginners who want to work with a lightly grogged stoneware clay.
Which glazes can be used?
The clay has a broad firing range. The selected glaze must always be suitable for the intended firing temperature. Transparent, light and coloured glazes generally show well on the white to light cream body. A test tile should always be fired before glazing the finished piece.
Our experience: The fine grog provides more support during throwing than a completely ungrogged clay body, without feeling as coarse on the hands as heavily grogged hand-building clay. This is particularly useful when throwing larger vessels and taller forms.
Our tip: Even stable clay bodies should be dried slowly and evenly. Loosely cover larger pieces and objects with varying wall thicknesses during the first drying stage to prevent rims, bases and attached elements from drying at different speeds.
