Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-83 Tip Taupe – brush-on glaze for coverage and detail
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-83 Tip Taupe is a highly pigmented, thick ceramic glaze for brushstrokes and opaque coverage. You apply it to damp clay or bisque-fired ware. It fires to a glossy surface, so you do not need an additional clear glaze.
The colours in the series can be placed next to each other without running. According to Mayco, this also applies to light over dark in the majolica technique. This gives you clean lines, details and multicoloured designs. The bottle contains 236 ml.
Application, coverage and mixing
One coat gives a translucent result, and further coats increase the coverage. For full coverage, Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. Let each coat dry before applying the next so that the finish stays even. Thinned with water, it gives a wash or watercolour effect. You can also mix Tip Taupe with the other colours in the series to create your own shades.
Firing and colour effect
According to Mayco, Stroke & Coat is designed to mature at cone 06/05, that is cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At high-fire temperatures the colours can change: dark shades tend to get darker, light ones fade. Mayco therefore recommends a test. For stoneware and high firing, make a test piece with Tip Taupe on your own clay before glazing a larger piece.
Dinnerware and safety
According to Mayco, the glaze is dinnerware safe. According to ACMI, the AP seal (Approved Product) means that no hazard labelling is required. This does not mean the product is safe for every purpose.
