Mayco Stoneware SW-154 Shipwreck – aquamarine stoneware glaze with iron speckles
Mayco Stoneware SW-154 Shipwreck is a stoneware glaze in glossy aquamarine with embedded iron crystals. You can use it to glaze vases, bowls and other ceramic pieces. During firing the iron crystals melt and leave small dark iron speckles. They add fine accents to the turquoise-blue surface.
The glaze is suitable for decorative ceramics. According to Mayco it is also dinnerware safe, and the ACMI AP seal confirms, according to ACMI, that no hazard labelling is required. The tub contains 473 ml.
Applying Shipwreck
Stir the glaze well before use so that the pigments and iron crystals are evenly distributed. Apply it in 2–3 even coats to the clean, bisque-fired clay body and let each coat dry to the touch. You can apply the glaze with a brush or dip the piece. Spraying is not intended. Coats that are too thick may run during firing, so leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash.
Firing and effect
Mayco gives a range of cone 5–6 for the Stoneware glazes. Cone 6 corresponds to approx. 1222 °C (guide value per Orton chart). How strongly the iron speckles show depends on the thickness of application and the firing, so every firing looks slightly different. The aqua-green gloss shows to particularly good effect on textured surfaces and calm, natural shapes. Make a test piece from your own clay beforehand if you want to gauge the result.
