Botz PRO 9305 Aquamarin – light blue/turquoise brush-on glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9305 Aquamarin is a ready-to-use brush-on glaze in glossy light blue/turquoise. With a firing range of 1020–1280 °C, you can use it on earthenware, stoneware and, at 1250 °C, on porcelain too. So you do not need a separate glaze for every clay.
The colour effect depends on the firing temperature. From 1020 °C, Aquamarin is strong and almost opaque. At around 1150 °C, as some early-vitrifying clays require, the colour is retained and the surface becomes more semi-transparent. In a high firing at around 1250 °C, a glassy, semi-transparent surface in a pastel shade is produced. Here Aquamarin melts out more transparently than some other colours in the PRO series, so expect a lighter, glassier blue. The glaze can be combined with Botz Unidekor and is suitable for raku according to Botz.
Application and firing
Stir the glaze well before applying and brush it onto the bisque-fired piece with a soft brush. The number of coats depends on the firing. Leave the glaze to dry for about a day before firing.
- Firing from 1020 °C (earthenware): 2–3 coats for strong, almost opaque colour
- Firing at around 1150 °C: 2 coats, semi-transparent surface
- High firing at around 1250 °C: glassy, semi-transparent surface, also on porcelain
- Botz gives a guide value of 1050 °C (earthenware) or 1250 °C (stoneware) with a hold time of 10–20 minutes
Preventing runs and firing tableware
Aquamarin tends to run when applied thickly. Apply thinner coats, even if you brush on several, and leave the foot of the piece unglazed so that nothing runs onto the kiln shelf. For cups, plates and bowls, Botz recommends the PRO glazes from approx. 1200 °C. In the earthenware range of 1020–1100 °C, many clays are not yet watertight. Do not fill such ceramics with liquids for long periods and do not leave them outside in frost.
