Botz PRO 9622 Amethyst – glossy violet glaze for earthenware and stoneware

Botz PRO 9622 Amethyst is a liquid, glossy brush-on glaze in violet for earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. It can be used across a wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C, so at both low and high firing temperatures. It is also suitable for raku.

As the glaze is semi-transparent, the colour of your clay affects the result. A test tile made from your own clay shows you beforehand how Amethyst looks at your firing temperature.

Application and firing temperature

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a soft brush to the bisque-fired, dust-free clay body. Let each coat dry before applying the next. The manufacturer gives general information for the whole PRO range on how the colours look at different temperatures; how light or dark Amethyst turns out for you is shown by your test firing.

• From 1020 °C (earthenware): strong colours, almost opaque, 2–3 coats
• Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): the colour is retained, the surface is more semi-transparent, 2 coats
• High firing/stoneware, e.g. 1250 °C: glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel shades, also on porcelain, 2 coats

Preventing runs

With a thick application from 1150 °C, the glaze tends to run. It is therefore better to apply one more thin coat than one thick coat, leave the foot of the piece unglazed and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. Botz PRO can also be combined with BOTZ Unidekor.
