Botz PRO 9304 Seladongrün – liquid glaze for earthenware and stoneware
Botz PRO 9304 Seladongrün liquid glaze gives ceramics a green colour and can be used across a very wide firing range of 1020 to 1280 °C. You can therefore use it on earthenware, stoneware and also on porcelain at 1250 °C. The tin contains 800 ml.
The finish depends on the firing temperature. In the earthenware range from 1020 °C, the glaze turns colourful and almost opaque. At around 1150 °C, as needed by some early-vitrifying clays, the colour is retained and the finish becomes more semi-transparent. In the high-fire and stoneware range, the PRO series gives a glassy, semi-transparent finish in intense pastel shades, according to Botz. One glaze with a single firing range will therefore work with different clays and kilns.
Application and firing
Apply the glaze to clean, bisque-fired clay body, and stir it well beforehand, as glaze particles settle at the bottom. How many coats you apply depends on the firing temperature:
- From 1020 °C (earthenware): 2–3 coats, the glaze becomes almost opaque
- Around 1150 °C (early-vitrifying clays): 2 coats, the finish becomes semi-transparent
- High-fire and stoneware up to 1280 °C: glassy and semi-transparent
- Porcelain: attractive results at 1250 °C
Avoiding runs
Botz points out that the glaze tends to run when applied thickly. Apply it evenly and not too thickly, leave a little space between the glaze and the foot at the bottom of the piece, and protect the kiln shelf with kiln wash. Because the glaze fires semi-transparent, the colour of the clay also influences the result. A test piece in your own clay will show you beforehand how the Seladongrün looks on your work.
Combining
According to Botz, the PRO glazes combine well with Botz Unidekor, for example for decoration on top of the glaze.
