Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-33 Fruit of the Vine – glossy ceramic glaze, mixable and thinnable
Mayco Stroke & Coat SC-33 Fruit of the Vine is a glossy ceramic glaze for bisque-fired ware and wet clay. You apply it with a brush. It can be mixed with the other colours in the range, and thinned with water or medium it gives wash and watercolour effects. The glaze fires glossy and, according to Mayco, needs no clear glaze over it.
The number of coats controls the opacity: one coat gives a translucent result, and for full opacity Mayco recommends 2–3 coats. This makes the glaze practical for details, outlines and multicoloured designs where you want to control the colour effect yourself.
Applying the glaze
Stir the glaze well before use and apply it evenly with a brush. Let each coat dry before applying the next. One coat stays slightly translucent, and with 2–3 coats the colour becomes opaque. If you thin it with water or medium, you can achieve soft gradients and transparent washes. You can mix SC-33 with other Stroke & Coat colours to create your own shades.
Firing and dinnerware
For Stroke & Coat, Mayco gives a firing range of cone 06 to cone 10, oxidising or reducing. The glazes are designed for cone 06/05. If you want to fire higher, for example at cone 6 (approx. 1222 °C, guide value per Orton chart), do a test first: behaviour differs from colour to colour.
- Use on wet clay and bisque-fired ware (earthenware or stoneware)
- Firing range cone 06–10, oxidising or reducing
- According to Mayco, dinnerware safe (Dinnerware Safe) after correct firing
