Mayco Jungle Gems S-2701 Peacock Eyes – crystal glaze for decorative ceramics
Mayco Jungle Gems Crystal Glaze S-2701 Peacock Eyes is a liquid crystal glaze for decorative ceramics such as vases, bowls and figures. It contains crystalline particles that spread during firing and form a lively surface with coloured crystal effects. Each piece therefore looks slightly different.
The glaze is ready to use and is applied with a brush. It is intended for decorative purposes only, not for dinnerware and not for contact with food: the surface may crackle. It cannot be sprayed.
Applying the crystal glaze
Shake the glaze well before each use and stir it so that the crystals are evenly distributed. Apply it with a fan brush in 2–3 even coats on bisque-fired ceramics and leave to dry between coats.
- On the third coat, redistribute the crystals if needed so that the coverage is even.
- Do not place crystals near the base: they may run and fuse the piece to the kiln shelf.
- Leave to dry thoroughly before firing.
Firing and colour effect
Fire at cone 06 (approx. 998 °C, guide value per Orton chart) to cone 05 (approx. 1,031 °C, guide value per Orton chart). At higher temperatures the colours become paler. Stick to the firing range if you want the crystal colours to stay strong. A test piece on your own clay body will show you beforehand how the crystals spread.
