Botz 9884 Wieselbraun stoneware glaze – glossy medium brown with fine effects

Wieselbraun (9884) is a liquid stoneware glaze from Botz for the firing range 1220–1280 °C. It gives a glossy, opaque, medium brown surface with fine light and dark effects that bring the glaze to life.

At this high firing temperature the glaze becomes frost-proof and vitrified according to Botz, so it does not absorb water. This also makes it suitable for stoneware that is kept outdoors, for example plant pots or garden ceramics.

Application

Stir the glaze well before use and apply it with a brush. Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. The thickness of the layers determines the shade: a very thin application makes the brown darker, while three coats make it somewhat lighter. Botz recommends two coats rather than three.

• Apply 2–3 coats, preferably 2 rather than 3

• A test piece shows you beforehand how the shade looks at your coat thickness

Firing and result

Wieselbraun is stable across the whole firing range from 1220 to 1280 °C. Botz recommends 1250 °C with a 30-minute hold. When firing, the pieces should not be glazed too thickly, and the foot should be left free of glaze so that nothing sticks to the kiln shelf.

Choosing from the range

Botz stoneware glazes come in many other shades for the same firing range. Wieselbraun is the one to choose if you want a warm, opaque brown with a slight texture. Glazes in different colours can be fired in the same load.
