KnitPro Symfonie cable needles – set of 3 wooden needles with grooves

The KnitPro Symfonie cable needle set contains three wooden cable needles in 3.25, 4.0 and 5.5 mm. You use them to hold the stitches that are worked out of order later in a cable pattern. Grooves in several places on each needle (five places) grip the stitches so they do not slip off. The tips taper well, and the stitches slide smoothly onto the needle and off again.

The three sizes cover cables in finer to thicker yarns, for example in scarves, hats and jumpers. The needles are multicoloured, and the grain of the wood varies from needle to needle.

Working a cable with a cable needle

The procedure is the same for almost all cable patterns. The number of stitches you hold and whether the needle sits in front of or behind the work are set by your pattern, and so determine the direction of the cable.

• Slip the stitches specified onto the cable needle.
• Leave the needle hanging at the front or back of the work, as your pattern states.
• Knit the next stitches from the left-hand needle as instructed.
• Knit the held stitches off the cable needle.

Which size should you choose?

The cable needle should not be thicker than your knitting needle, so that the stitches are not overstretched when slipped. The 3.25 mm needle therefore suits fine yarn and the 5.5 mm needle suits thicker yarn, with the 4.0 mm in between. The grooves hold the stitches even if you put your knitting down for a moment.
