AMI Canvas Board on MDF – a firm, primed surface for oil, acrylic and gouache
The AMI canvas board consists of an MDF panel approx. 3.2 mm thick, covered with medium-grain cotton fabric (350 g/m²). The fabric is primed several times, so you can start painting straight away with oil, acrylic or gouache paints.
The back of the board is laminated with paper, which keeps it stable and flat. Unlike a canvas on a stretcher frame, it does not give way as you paint, you never need to re-tension it, and it can be stored flat.
What you can use the canvas board for
The firm surface suits studies, sketches, practice pieces and small pictures that you want to frame later or place on an easel. The medium-grain fabric takes paint evenly and leaves room for detailed work without the texture showing through strongly.
How to use it
Draw your underdrawing with pencil or heavily thinned paint. With acrylic, start with thin glazes diluted with water and build up the opacity gradually. With oil paints, work "fat over lean": first with little painting medium, then with more in the upper layers. Let each layer dry to the touch before applying the next.
