Balsa carving block – soft, light wood without knots

The balsa block is carving wood made from balsa, a very soft and light wood. As it has no knots, your knife will not hit any hard spots while carving. This makes the block suitable for first carving attempts, small figures and models.

At approx. 200 × 100 × 40 mm, the block offers enough material for animals, boats or shapes the size of your hand. You can also cut it into smaller pieces before carving.

How to carve balsa

Draw the shape on the block in pencil and remove the material in small, shallow shavings. Balsa is so soft that a sharp knife cuts deep with very little pressure. Always cut away from your body and with the grain so that the wood does not tear out. A blunt knife presses into the soft wood rather than cutting it. Finish the fine detail and the surface afterwards with sandpaper.
