BeaverCraft SK1 Oak Spoon Knife – Hook Knife with 25 mm Curve and Oak Handle

The BeaverCraft SK1 Oak spoon knife is a single-edged hook knife for carving spoons, bowls and kuksa. It is an improved version of the classic SK1. The curve diameter of 25 mm suits small workpieces, such as teaspoons, coffee scoops or small dishes. This is where you use it to scoop the hollow out of the wood.

The blade is made of 1066 high-carbon steel at 57–59 HRC and is ground at an angle of 20°. According to BeaverCraft, it is best suited to softwood. The manufacturer does not recommend it for hardwood, because the fine edge can go blunt faster there. The oak handle is treated with linseed oil, and the knife is designed for right-handed users.

Working with the spoon knife

With the hook knife you hollow out spoon bowls, dishes and kuksa. Because the blade is single-edged, according to BeaverCraft you can cut with one hand resting on top of the blade and so gain more control. Begin with thin shavings and work down gradually into the depth. If the wood tears out, you are cutting against the grain: turn the workpiece and change the cutting direction. Hold the workpiece securely, and never move the blade towards your holding hand.

Which size and which wood?

With a 25 mm curve, the knife is suited to small hollows and tight radii. For large, widely curved bowls you need a knife with a larger curve diameter. It is best to use fresh or easily carved softwood, as the 20° grind is designed for it.

Care

Carbon steel can rust. Wipe the blade dry after carving and store the knife in a dry place. A blunt edge can be touched up on a leather strop with polishing paste.
