BeaverCraft SK2L – left-handed spoon carving knife for hollowing spoons and bowls
The BeaverCraft SK2L is a spoon carving knife for left-handers, which you can use to hollow out spoons, bowls, kuksas and other concave shapes in wood. It is the left-handed version of the SK2. Because the blade is ground on one side only, right-handers should choose the SK2. The U-shaped blade has a curve diameter of 30 mm. It is made of carbon steel, hardened to 56+ HRC and firmly glued into the ash wood handle. The knife is supplied sharpened.
The bevel angle is 20°. According to BeaverCraft, this fine edge suits softwood well. In hardwood it dulls more quickly. With a total length of 170 mm and a handle length of 105 mm, the handle sits comfortably in the hand, so you can guide the knife safely.
Hollowing with a spoon knife
Work the hollow of a spoon in many shallow strokes rather than a few deep cuts. The wood then tears out less, and you keep control of the wall thickness.
- Clamp the workpiece firmly or hold it so that your free hand always stays behind the blade.
- Place the curve of the blade against the wood and cut in small strokes along the grain.
- Check the wall thickness regularly and work from the edges towards the deepest point of the hollow.
- Practise on softwood, as the fine edge with its 20° bevel angle is designed for it.
Sharpening and care
You need to resharpen the edge yourself. As the blade is ground on one side only, you work just the ground side. Carbon steel can rust in damp conditions, so you should wipe the blade dry after carving. Store the knife so that the edge is protected.
