The BeaverCraft SK1 spoon carving knife is a hook knife for carving wooden spoons and other hollow shapes such as small bowls. The blade curves upwards and has a curve diameter of 25 mm. You use it to hollow out the bowl of a spoon and shape its curve. The knife is made for right-handed users and the blade is ground on one side only. The manufacturer makes separate models for left-handed users.

The blade is made of carbon steel and keeps a fine edge. Carbon steel is not stainless: dry the blade after carving and wipe it regularly with a little oil, for example camellia oil. The ash handle is treated with linseed oil and, at 105 mm long, is comfortable to hold.

How to hollow out a spoon

Clamp the workpiece firmly or hold it securely on a stable surface. Place the knife at the edge of the bowl and draw the edge towards the centre in thin shavings. Work with the grain, as the wood tears out easily against the grain. Always keep your holding hand behind the blade and never in the line of cut. Turn the workpiece a little after each stroke so the curve comes out evenly. A cut-resistant glove on the holding hand gives extra protection.

Wood and sharpness

The manufacturer specifies a sharpening angle of 20° for the edge. It suits softwood, such as lime or alder. The manufacturer advises against hardwood, because the fine edge dulls faster there. When the sharpness fades, restore it with a leather strop and polishing compound.

25 mm or 30 mm?

With a curve diameter of 25 mm you can hollow out narrow bowls and smaller spoons. The 30 mm model has a wider curve and is better suited to larger, shallower bowls.
