BeaverCraft left-handed spoon carving knife – hooked blade for carving spoons and bowls
The BeaverCraft spoon carving knife with a 25 mm curve diameter is a hooked carving knife for left-handed users. You use it to hollow out spoons, bowls and kuksas and to cut deep, round recesses in wood. The curved blade follows the curve of the bowl, so you shape the inside of the spoon cut by cut.
The blade is sharpened to a cutting angle of 20°. According to the manufacturer, this fine edge is suitable for softwood. With an overall length of 155 mm and a 105 mm handle, the knife is compact and easy to control. This helps when hollowing out small bowls.
How to hollow out a spoon
Clamp the piece of wood firmly or hold it securely on a stable surface before you work the bowl. Place the blade at the edge of the bowl and draw it through the wood with a steady stroke. Work in small shavings rather than deep cuts, so you keep control. Cut with the grain wherever possible; against the grain the wood tears out easily. Your holding hand and thumb must never be in the cutting direction in front of the blade.
Which wood is suitable?
With the 20° grind the edge is fine. It is suitable for softwood such as lime. In hardwood it becomes blunt more quickly, so the manufacturer advises against this. A blunt blade cuts untidily and needs more force, which increases the risk of injury. Sharpen or strop it in good time.
Care
Steel blades can rust. Store the knife in a dry place and wipe the blade after carving, and for longer storage lightly oil it.
