BeaverCraft C5 Bench Knife – carving knife with a 50 mm blade for softwood
The BeaverCraft C5 bench knife is a wood carving knife with a 50 mm blade, used for carving and marking details in softwood. The blade is made of 1066 high-carbon steel at 57–59 HRC and has a 20° cutting angle. This fine edge glides easily through softwood. According to BeaverCraft, it dulls faster in hardwood, so the knife is not recommended for it. According to the manufacturer, the rounded tip is very durable.
The ash handle is polished and treated with natural linseed oil. Thanks to its ambidextrous design, the knife sits comfortably in either the right or the left hand. BeaverCraft gives a 10-year guarantee on the steel. The knife is handmade.
What the C5 is used for
A bench knife has a short blade and can be guided close to the edge. The C5 is therefore suited to detail work: trimming edges and surfaces, refining contours, marking lines and carving small figures or practical items from softwood such as lime (linden) or pine. For heavy stock removal or hardwood, it is better to use another tool, so that the fine edge does not dull unnecessarily.
Safe use and care
Carve with cuts away from your body and never put your free hand in front of the blade. The carbon steel blade can rust in damp conditions. Wipe it dry after use and rub it lightly with oil for longer storage. You can restore a dulled edge with a leather strop and polishing compound.
