Lang Yarns ORION – merino gradient yarn for thick needles

Lang Yarns ORION is a gradient yarn made from extra fine superwash merino wool, for jumpers, cardigans and accessories that knit up quickly. The yarn is made of 88% virgin wool (extra fine merino, superwash, mulesing-free) and 12% polyamide. The polyamide gives the yarn stability, and the superwash finish makes the wool more resistant to felting. One ball weighs 100 g and has a length of approx. 270 m, so you can estimate the quantity needed for your project quite easily.

The name refers to the Orion Nebula: the colours blend into one another in fine gradients and shades. Choose your colour from the options.

What to knit with ORION

ORION is a thick yarn in chunky weight. On 6–7 mm needles you make quick progress, so it suits jumpers, cardigans, scarves, hats and snoods. The colour changes add interest on their own, so simple stitch patterns such as stocking stitch, rib or moss stitch are usually enough. Very intricate patterns tend to get lost in the gradient.

Planning and working

As a rough guide, allow approx. 300 g for a men's or women's jumper in size M and approx. 200 g for a child's jumper for age 10. The actual yarn requirements depend on the design, stitch pattern and length. Buy the whole quantity in one go if possible, so that the colour gradient matches across all the balls. If you knit the sleeves or the front and back separately, you can match the gradient at the joins by looking for a suitable point in the colour gradient when you start a new ball.

What matters is the tension given in your pattern; the figure on the ball band is only a guide. For care, Lang Yarns states that you should use a wool detergent without fabric softener.
