Faber-Castell Polychromos – single artists' colouring pencil to replace or add a colour
The Faber-Castell Polychromos artists' colouring pencil is a colouring pencil sold singly, for drawings, illustrations and sketches. You order exactly one pencil and choose your colour from the options. That way you can add a specific shade to an existing set or replace a colour you have used up.
Faber-Castell designs the Polychromos pencils for professional and semi-professional users. The areas of use named are graphic applications, free artistic work and colouring plans. According to the manufacturer, the pigments have very high lightfastness. That matters if your work is going to hang framed on the wall or be stored.
Working with the Polychromos pencil
The lead is 3.8 mm thick and lays down colour softly and richly. You can build up even areas with it and, with a sharpened point, work out fine detail. Because the colour is smudge-resistant, it does not smear easily once applied. You can layer several coats without dragging the layer beneath. Sharpen the lead with a sharp sharpener and do not press it hard onto the paper while drawing. That way it is less likely to break out. The Secural bonding holds the lead firmly in the wood and makes it more break-resistant, even if the pencil is dropped.
Single pencil or set?
The single pencil suits you if you want to replace a particular colour or add one shade to your set. Faber-Castell also offers Polychromos in sets, for example in a metal tin or a wooden case. If you are just starting with the series, a set is the easier way in. You can then add individual colours as needed.
