The Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils in the 36-piece metal tin are highly pigmented artist pencils for pastel drawings with fine detail. They are wax- and oil-free and have a 4.3 mm thick lead with rich colour application. According to Faber-Castell, the pigments are very lightfast, and the lead is acid-free.

You use the pencils where a pastel stick is too coarse: for outlines, hatching and small areas. Like the Faber-Castell Polychromos pastel sticks, the colours can be blended into fine gradients. This way you can combine pencils and sticks in one picture.

Working with the pastel pencils

Pastel pencils need a paper with tooth so that the pigments adhere. Start with light pressure and build up the colour in layers. For soft transitions, blend the colours with your finger or a blending stump. Add details and outlines at the end with the sharpened lead. The lead is soft and breaks easily, so it is best sharpened with a sharp knife. Faber-Castell states that only minimal fixing is needed and the colour brilliance is retained. The colours also remain colourfast with fixative.

Which set suits you?

The series is available as a 12, 24, 36 and 60 metal tin. The set of 36 sits in the middle: you have more choice than in the smaller tins and can apply shades directly more often instead of mixing them. The metal tin keeps the pencils together when you transport or store them.
