Faber-Castell Pitt pastel pencils are artist pencils with a high pigment content, free from wax and oil. You can use them to draw pastel pictures with fine detail and then blend the colours into soft gradients. The tin of 60 (art. no. 112160) contains 60 pencils in different colours, so you have a wide choice for mixing and graduating shades.

The lead is 4.3 mm thick, acid-free and, according to the manufacturer, very lightfast. It gives rich, saturated colour. Because the pencils contain no wax and no oil, they can be blended just like Polychromos pastel chalks. They complement pastel chalk when you want to place contours and small areas precisely.

Working with the pastel pencils

Start drawing with light pressure and build up colour in layers. This keeps the paper receptive, so you can still layer more colours on top later. To blend, use a blending stump, a cloth or your finger. You can then sharpen up details and highlights again with the lead. You only need a minimal amount of fixative, because according to the manufacturer the colours remain stable under fixatives and the brilliance of pastel pictures is preserved.

Which set suits you?

The range is available as tins of 12, 24, 36 and 60. The 60 gives you the widest choice of colours and means less mixing when you need fine colour transitions. For getting started or simple subjects, smaller sets are also enough.
